Whilst historically Public Hire Insurance or Hackney Carriage Insurance was always cheaper than Private Hire Insurance this is no longer the case. Most, if not all-local authorities licence their Private Hire drivers and the vast majority are now full-time professional drivers.

If you are involved in a "non-fault" accident our Public Hire Insurance and Private Hire Insurance can provide a "plated" replacement vehicle, subject to local authority approval for the duration of repairs.

Most insurers will allow private use or a taxi within the public hire or private hire insurance policy. However most local authorities will not! We can provide quotations, however cover will only be issued subject to written confirmation from the local authority that they are aware and happy with these circumstances.

Like all insurance policies you must own the vehicle you are going to insure. However certain insurers will allow third party only cover for rented vehicles, this facility is available for both Private Hire and Public Hire insurance.

Most insurers will include unlimited liability for passengers whilst inside the vehicle, however the local authority will require additional liability for contract work (schools and health authorities). This can be purchased as an "add-on" and prices are available for up to £5 million.
Is a "black-cab" cheaper to insure than a normal saloon car? Back to top | Get quote
The traditional Hackney Carriage is generally cheaper to insurer than a normal saloon car. However you will also pay higher premiums for both multi seated vehicles (MPV's) and prestige marques.

We will require a copy of your drivers licence, local authority taxi licence for both driver and vehicle, a completed proposal form and proof of previous insurance (if relevant), in order to issue private or public hire insurance.

The more drivers you add to the policy the more expensive the cover, whilst you can still buy "any-driver" taxi insurance policies you should try limit this to any driver over 25 or even 30 years of age.
